For decades, conveyor belts have put in guest appearances in cliffhanger movies such as "The Perils of Pauline," and in song, as in The Coasters "Along Came Jones," where the heroine is tied up and sent on to her imminent finish. You may even have seen that famous glove traveling down a conveyor belt full of bottles in the 1970s sitcom "Laverne & Shirley." But QC Industries (www.qcindustries.com) is looking for a few real stories about conveyors in action.

The Cincinnati company is celebrating its silver anniversary and, as a way of having a little fun with its product, has launched a contest to find applications that best represent the conveyor belt's achievements. For the "Best Use of a Conveyor" award, they are looking for just about every application you can think of, from food processing to metal stamping, and from pharmaceutical to assembly lines. QC Industries is leaving the definition of "best use" open to the user or the person submitting the entry, but it's a sure bet that helpless heroines tied down to the conveyor at the sawmill and heading for the gigantic whirling sawblade, or gloves floating by on a beer-capping line, won't be in the running for the prize.

QC Industries is promising that every entrant who submits their conveyor for consideration will receive a Blockbuster Gift Card and a QC Industries thermal coffee mug. Grand prize will be a 26-in. flat-panel LCD TV. Three runners-up will receive portable DVD players.

To enter, mail or email photos and/or videos of the conveyor in action, with information on how you can be contacted. Entries must be received by August 31, 2006. Entries can be submitted by mail to "Best Use of a Conveyor," c/o QC Industries, 4057 Clough Woods Dr., Batavia, OH 45103 or by email to [email protected]. The company says all submissions will become the property of QC Industries and may be used in future publicity programs. The company will contact the winners for more information about their application, and judges' decisions are final.

QC Industries, founded in Cincinnati in 1981, has a 55,000 square-ft corporate headquarters with a 2,000-square-ft display room filled with a full assortment of operating conveyors and interactive conveyor displays.
