On March 30, Sandvik Coromant released its new CoroTurn PI family of internal turning tools. According to the industrial equipment company, the new all-directional tools are suitable for machining features like holes in shafts, ring gears, and connection in hubs in ISO P, M, and K materials.

The CoroTurn PI tools are designed to address common issues in internal turning. To address chip buildup, the CoroTurn line includes a high-precision chip breaker and small angles designed to evacuate chips. Sandvik Coromant also noted vibration and deflection can also be issues with internal machining. The tool also boasts multiple coolant configurations for blind or through holes, and two separate insert seats, one for roughing and one for finishing. Each roughing insert comes with eight cutting edges.

In a statement, Sascha Bolling, Sandvik Coromant global PM, said the new tools’ specialization can improve machining throughput.

“This tool is all about process security,” Bolling said. “Internal turning is complex, but a dedicated tool like CoroTurn PI will not only prevent cutting issues but also boost productivity, output and cost-efficiency.”
