In January, Air Turbine Technology, Inc., a high-speed turbine spindle and hand tool company; and Okuma America Corporation, which produces CNC machines and automation systems, announced a joint partnership that would offer an integrated version of their respective products: Air Turbine tools governed 25k to 90k RPM spindles and live tooling for use in Okuma’s CNC machines and lathes. In a joint statement, the companies said the integrated tools would reduce cycle times, enhance tool performance and increase production output.

The partnership will see Air Turbine’s spindles, live tools and motors as installable add-ons to Okuma CNCs and lathes using direct air-through-spindle capability, a tool changer mounting assembly, or manual airline connection. The companies found Air Turbine brand tools reduced cycle time in programs with tools up to a quarter-inch capacity. Some cutting tools are suitable for lights-out production, the statement said.

David Vega, a member of the Okuma’s Partners in Technology Team, said wear on Okuma spindles is “greatly reduced” when combined with Air Turbine’s technology. Simon Shane, Air Turbine Tools Chairman, praised Okuma’s CNC machines and said the combination would improve both companies’ offerings.

“Okuma builds some of the finest, most durable CNC machines available,” Shane said. “We are proud to partner with Okuma and bring this solution to manufacturers who can now add high speed on Okuma machines.”
