Big Kaiser Precision Tooling Inc. has designed a special point geometry for the new addition to its Sphinx Quadro Plus line of drills to improve their performance in cutting steel, cast iron and nonferrous metals. The new drills have 15-degree helix angles that make them suitable for long-chipping materials. The company says the Sphinx Quadro 15 Plus drills are extremely rigid so they require less cutting force and permit machinists to increase feedrates and spindle speeds to drill as much as 50 percent faster while holding close tolerances. The drills can achieve hole quality of H7 or better, the company says. The drills are made from ultrafine carbide grain and are available in diameters from 0.157 in. to 0.787 in., in standard lengths of six times diameter, and with coolant through the drill. The drills are available with Balzer's Futura Nano Top TiAlN coating that the company says optimizes chip evacuation, improves wear resistance and extends tool life.www.bigkaiser.com
