Fokker makes safer landing gears with new testing machines
One of Fokker Landing Gear’s new Messphysik Materials Testing creep-testing machines.

To minimize the risk of damage due to hydrogen absorption in aircraft components, Fokker Landing Gear recently equipped its mechanical laboratory with three Kappa 50 LA creep-testing machines from Messphysik Materials Testing GmbH.

ISO 9001-certified Messphysik, an Austrian engineering company, develops testing technologies and equipment. It is the Zwick Roell Group’s center of expertise for optical strain measurement and creep testing. Messphysik develops testing solutions based on the Zwick Roell product range to meet the most exacting requirements.

Fokker Landing Gear is one of five business units of Fokker Technologies, the Dutch aerospace group that develops and manufactures components for aircraft and defense systems. As a supplier of best-in-class landing gear systems for helicopters and airplanes, Fokker was impressed by the flexibility provided by the testControl machine electronics and testXpert testing software. Expert advice and the compactness of the testing systems were other decisive selection criteria.

Using the Kappa 50 LA lever-arm creep testing systems, hydrogen embrittlement is tested mechanically in accordance with the international ASTM F519 standard. Test specimens are produced under the same manufacturing conditions as the original components.

With its three new testing systems, Fokker can test up to 12 specimens simultaneously, thereby ensuring that test results are available rapidly enough to ensure the company’s high production throughput remains unaffected.

Messphysik has a long, global record of success in optical strain measurement for materials testing. Using Zwick Roell components allows Messphysik products to be sold and serviced worldwide. Zwick’s testControl electronics, for example, provide precise, standard-compliant test control, while testXpert testing software is both intuitive and easy-to-use for any operator.
