General Motors will on-shore assembly of a compact sport utility vehicle from China to the U.S., starting in 2028. The automaker confirmed the plan by email to Reuters, further noting the new Buick Envision SUV will be built at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kan.
While confirming the new production plan, GM has not identified the specific vehicle to be produced there.
The Buick Envision is a crossover vehicle that has been manufactured exclusively by the SAIC-General Motors Corp. Ltd. joint venture since 2014, for sale in the U.S. since 2017. It has been one of the top-selling Buick models in the U.S. during recent years, including 47,340 units sold during 2024.
“This decision further strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports U.S. jobs, building on $5.5 billion in new investments announced across our U.S. manufacturing sites in the last year,” according to the published statement.
It’s unknown if SUVs will continue to be assembled by SAIC-GM for sale in China and/or other markets.
The plan may be related to U.S. tariffs on imported vehicle and parts, but GM has not stated that factor in its decision. Last year GM moved to relocate Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty truck production from Mexico and Canada to its Fort Wayne, Ind., assembly plant.
Also for the 2028 model year, Honda Motor Co. plans to locate assembly of a new Civic hybrid vehicle in in Greenville, Ind., rather than at Guanajuato, Mexico, as initially planned.
