An “ultra-low cost” carrier has made a $4.4-billion commitment to Embraer’s E195-E2 regional aircraft in a fleet modernization and expansion effort, booking 50 of the twin-engine jets from the Brazilian manufacturer. Avelo Airlines’ purchase agreement includes options for 50 more of the same model aircraft, which is the largest variant of Embraer’s E2 series.
Avelo will be the first U.S. operator for the E195-E2, which seats up to 150 passengers. The manufacturer stated that the new aircraft’s “short-field performance, enabled by E2TS (Embraer Enhanced Takeoff System), Embraer’s first of its kind proprietary technology, is a key capability that will open new markets for Avelo and drive efficiency in many of Avelo’s existing airports.”
Avelo Airlines is a former charter service (Casino Express) that converted to the ultra-low cost model in April 2021. It operates a fleet of 22 Boeing 737NG aircraft, serving 54 destinations, with two distinct route networks for the East Coast and Western U.S.
Earlier this week Avelo announced it had completed a round of capital fundraising that will support its route extension across the U.S. and to the Caribbean, and that it had secured a new, unnamed partner.
“We are thrilled to partner with Embraer and bring this best-in-class small narrowbody airplane to the United States marketplace,” stated founder and CEO Andrew Levy. “Our customers will love the E2’s comfortable 2x2 seating, in-seat power ports, large overhead bins, and quiet cabin. The aircraft’s exceptional performance, size, and efficiency make it the perfect choice for the future growth of our scheduled service network.”
Embraer announced a fuel-efficient update to its established E-Jet series of regional jets in 2013, and the E2 series debuted in 2016. The redesign includes a new wing structure and fly-by-wire flight control system, and the aircraft are powered by twin Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engines.
“The E195‑E2 is a game‑changer for airlines that want to grow profitably while elevating the guest experience,” stated Arjan Meijer, president and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation. “Its exceptional fuel efficiency, quiet operations, and short‑field capability will unlock new markets and optimize capacity across its network - all with a cabin that passengers truly love.”
