Canada’s WestJet has placed the largest order in its history, totaling at least 67 aircraft for its all-Boeing fleet, to be delivered by 2034. The tally includes 60 737 MAX-10 jets, and options for 25 more of the same models; and seven 787-9 Dreamliners, plus options for four more of the same.
According to Boeing’s announcement, WestJet has one of the youngest fleets in North America, with an average age of approximately 10 years. With the new orders, it will have 107 bookings with Boeing.
"We look forward to supporting WestJet's exciting growth as they leverage the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner to serve even more passengers with great efficiency and comfort," stated Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
Neither Boeing nor WestJet indicated the total value of the new, but it could be worth as much as $10.14 billion based on reported listed prices for those aircraft.
The carrier serves more than 100 destinations in North America, the Caribbean, Europe, and South Korea from hubs in Calgary and Toronto. Its current fleet totals 157 Boeing 737 NG, 737 MAX, and 787s.
"With the addition of these aircraft, WestJet has the largest order book of any airline in Canada, and will double our fleet of Dreamliners, underpinning our growth plans and our commitment to affordable travel options for Canadians and exciting career paths for our people," according to Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet CEO.
