GE Appliances unveiled plans to invest more than $3 billion at five U.S. plants to reshore production of several home appliance series during the next five years. The company, a U.S.-based subsidiary of Haier, expects to add more than 1,000 employees as it relocates production of air conditioners, gas ranges, refrigerators, washer/dryers, and water heaters from China and Mexico to domestic locations, with 11 U.S. manufacturing plants targeted for updates and expansion with new automation and capital equipment.
The investments will begin later this year and involve operations in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
In June GE Appliances announced a $490-million investment at its headquarters plant in Louisville to expand production for combo washer/dryers and front-load washers. This effort will result in 800 new jobs there.
“No other appliance company over the last decade has invested more in U.S. manufacturing than we have, and our $3 billion, five-year plan shows that our commitment to U.S. manufacturing will continue into the future,” stated president and CEO Kevin Nolan.
Along with the Louisville project, four other initiatives involve: An expansion at GE Appliances in Camden, S.C., to add manufacturing of demand-response electric water heater and GeoSpring™ hybrid heat pump water heater, in addition to the gas water heaters now produced there. The first stage of the project will be completed early in 2026.
In December, at the Monogram Refrigeration LLC plant in Selmer, Tenn., GE Appliances will start production of two new models of two-ton vertical Zoneline® air conditioners.
The Roper Corp. plant in LaFayette, Ga., will continue ongoing capital investment to add manufacturing of gas, electric, and induction ranges, while continuing to produce wall electric wall ovens and cooktops. The gas ranges have been manufacturing in Mexico, GE Appliances noted.
A plant in Decatur, Ala., will add production of six 22-cu.ft top-freezer refrigerators, with production to begin by the end of August.
The five-year program represents the second-largest investment ever for GE Appliances, and when complete the company will have invested $6.5 billion across its U.S. manufacturing and nationwide distribution network since 2016.
