General Motors indicated it is restarting the eight-speed transmission production line at its plant in Silao, Mexico, signaling future starts for the GM's North American assembly plants that rely on that operation to deliver subsystems for their own activities.
The Silao plant has been idled since April as part of GM's wider shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. GM Mexico indicated the transmission plant would begin to restart on May 22, with all employees required to have their temperatures checked before starting a shift, wear personal protective equipment at all times, and maintain a distance of 1.5 meters from other workers.
The Silao operation, in central Mexico, also includes an engine plant, and GM noted that plans were still being evaluated concerning reopening other operations in Mexico — including assembly plants at Silao and Ramos Arizpe — were still being evaluated.
