Joint-venture draws $427-million award for 160 cars, to be delivered in 2020

A Bombardier joint venture has drawn a China Railway contract estimated to be worth $427 million to manufacture 160 high-speed train cars. The CR400AF cars — to be supplied as ten, 16-car trainsets — will be delivered by midyear.

The supplier is Bombardier Sifang Transportation Ltd. (BST), is a 50-50 joint venture of the Berlin-based Bombardier Transportation business unit and Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. Ltd., established in Qingdao, Shandong Province, in 1998 to produce high-speed trains and coaches.

CR400AF cars are part of the latest standard for Chinese high-speed rail, described as the world's fasted high-speed train in regular service, capable of traveling at 350 km/h (217 mph.)

This is the third contract from China Railway for BST. Since 2018, it has built and delivered a total of 288 CR400AF cars under two separate contracts.

"We are very proud to have been chosen to supply the new generation of CR400AF cars, a high-speed railway car, through our BST joint venture," stated Bombardier Transportation China president Jianwei Zhang. "Bombardier is proud of its contributions to China’s rail industry and looks forward to delivering more of the high-quality products that are helping China meet its ambitious long-term mobility goals.”
