Tormach announced the launch of its new 15LX CNC lathe November 4. According to a company release, the lathe’s motor features high-torque operation in a relatively compact design.

The 15LX, a successor to the company’s 15L CNC lathe, features a spindle motor with 6 horsepower of continuous duty power and peaks up to 10 horsepower for more difficult cuts. Compared to the 15L, which had feed rates of 60 inches per minute on the X and Z axes and a Z-axis travel range of one foot, the 15LX has feed rates of 360 inches per minute on the X and Z axis and a Z-axis travel range of 14 inches.

According to Tormach, the new lathe also includes an EtherCAT-based control system, an enclosure, a chip tray, an automatic oiler, a turret and a flood coolant system with an external washdown hose. The company also offers a single pully ratio to replace manual gear changes and integrated load meters for real-time performance monitoring of the axis and spindle.

Davie Froeschner, Presales Team Lead at Tormach, said in a statement the new lathe is a substantial upgrade to its previous model.

“With this machine, we’ve doubled the spindle power, added absolute encoder servos across the platform and dramatically improved rapid speeds,” Froeschner said. “These upgrades make it far more powerful than the 15L, and I expect its performance will take people by surprise when they see it operate.”
