More Functionality for Five-Axis VMC

Oct. 12, 2023
The Variaxis i-800 NEO vertical is enhanced with a new CNC that allows the five-axis machine to achieve faster machining cycle times, with expanded workpiece capacities and more automation options.

MAZAK highlighted the next-generation capabilities of its Variaxis i-800 NEO vertical machining center during its DISCOVER 2023 event – including the powerful new CNC that allows the five-axis machine to achieve faster machining cycle times, with expanded workpiece capacities and more automation options.

Chief among the enhancements is the Mazatrol SmoothAi CNC that includes the Smooth Machining Configuration (SMC) for process optimization, with real-time operator control for a range of cutting parameters. The machine’s Ai Thermal Shield supports stable machining accuracy through smart heat-displacement compensation, while Smooth Project Manager Gateway synchronizes machining data throughout a shop, and manages tool data, fixtures, coordinate system, parameters and workpiece 3D models to execute machining programs.

Working together with external CAM software, Smooth Project Manager Gateway provides access to internal machine data. This allows the programmer to query the machine and download machine models, current tooling configuration, offset data, stroke limits and many other configuration parameters. CAM programmers can use this information to increase machine-program accuracy and configure programs to the limits and capabilities of the actual machine.

Mazatrol SmoothAi CNC achieves highly realistic program simulations with current, real-time set-up information, which gives even less-experienced operators the confidence to run highly complex part programs.

The Variaxis i-800 NEO’s tooling configuration can be modified and updated at the CAM workstation and sent back to the machine so operators can complete setup more accurately than ever before.

In terms of speed, the Variaxis i-800 NEO achieves rapid traverse rates of 1,890 ipm (48,000 m/m) in the X, Y and Z axes, which reduces cycle time significantly. Axis strokes of 29.52 in. in X, 35.03 in. in Y and 23.62 in. in Z (750 mm x 890 mm x 600 mm) accommodate larger workpieces. Maximum workpiece weight capacities are 2,204.62 lbs (1,000 kg) on the single-table version of the Variaxis i-800 NEO, and up to 1,543.24 lb (700 kg) with a two-pallet changer.

The machine handles maximum tool lengths up to 16.33 in. (415 mm) in available magazine capacities of 30, 40, 80 120 tools. A new servo drive shortens tool wait times by up to 58%, and a 4.3-second chip-to-chip tool change time reduces noncut time even further.

For additional flexibility, automation options include a two-pallet changer, along with the Mazak Multi-Pallet Pool (MPP) compact multiple pallet stocker system and the modular Mazak PalleTech System. The Variaxis i-800 NEO can work in the same PalleTech cell with other popular Mazak machining centers. To support hydraulic and pneumatic fixturing, the machine provides nine ports with a single-table configuration, and four ports inside plus eight outside the machine for two-pallet changing.
