Gleason Buys Brazilian Gear Cutting Tool Business

Adds Hurth Infer business unit, Brazil represents &ldquo;longer-term growth opportunities&rdquo; Gear cutters, chamfering and deburring tools Rebranding, keeping operation intact

Rochester, N.Y.-based Gleason Corporation acquired the gear cutting tools business from Hurth Infer Indústria de Máquinas e Ferramentas Ltda., in Sorocaba, Brazil.  Renamed Gleason Indústria de Ferramentas Ltda., the business includes shaving cutters, shaper cutters, and chamfering and deburring tools, and tool sharpening services for those products.

Hurth Infer designs and manufactures various cutting tools, including broaches, and round tools, including drills and milling cutters.  Its customers opereate in a number of industrial sectors, in Brazil and beyond. 

The value of the purchase was not announced. Gleason noted its new Brazilian operation would continue to operate with its current staff, in a separate facility at its current location.

“While the economy in Brazil is currently depressed, it remains a significant market for us, offering longer-term growth opportunities,” according to John J. Perrotti, Gleason president and CEO. “We have long-standing relationships with most of the gear producers in this region and expect that expanding our local manufacturing capabilities will further strengthen those relationships.”

Gleason describes itself as “The Total Gear Solutions Provider”, designing and manufacturing machines for producing gears, and related equipment and automation. Its customers are manufacturers of components for automotive, truck, aircraft, agriculture, mining, energy, construction, power tool, and marine industries. Gleason has manufacturing operations in the U.S., Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, India, China and Japan.

Aniello Milone and Rafael Funaro, managing directors, explained that Hurth Infer would refocus its business on manufacturing broach tools and round tools, and on performing commercial heat treatment at locations in Sorocaba, Joinville, and Cachoeirinha, Brazil.
