The Precision Machining Research Consortium (PMRC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology's Research Center wants to put the benefits of its research into the hands of American companies. To do so, it is targeting three key objectives: establishing intimate university-industry research links, formulating multi-industry partnerships that address technical needs in manufacturing, and educating students and researchers in specialized, high-technology fields.
As part of its program, the PMRC uses 70 seats of GibbsCam CAM software from Gibbs and Associates (www.gibbscam.com). GibbsCam also is a part of Georgia Tech's manufacturing curriculum. Through these programs, more than 350 students gain exposure to the CAM software that supports 3D milling, turning, mill/turn, 4 and 5-axis positioning and multiple CADexchange formats.
GibbsCam helps the PMRC to perform analytical, numerical and experimental studies that address topics related to modeling, planning, optimization, monitoring, control and metrology of precision machining processes and machine tools.
