New Mastercam Release Includes Dynamic Milling, Other Capabilities

Mastercam X5 also introduces new functionality for multi-axis machining, hybrid finishing, and other tasks

CNC Software is introducing some notable new capabilities with the release of Mastercam X5, the latest iteration of its job-shop-focused CAD/CAM software series. These new functions include new dynamic milling techniques, multi-axis machining, and Smart Hybrid Finishing, among others.

”Dynamic milling” is a capability for constant adjustment of a toolpath to ensure the most efficient cut that is possible. It also makes use of the entire length of a tool, often eliminating the need for multiple depth cuts. New dynamic milling techniques in Mastercam X5 include Dynamic Rest Mill and Dynamic Contour.
• Dynamic Rest Mill behaves in a manner similar to the current toolpath, except that it uses a dynamic milling motion rather than a core mill or area mill motion for the rest operations.
• Dynamic Contour uses an intelligent, high-speed contouring strategy to remove material along walls efficiently. It also supports multi-passes and can optionally include finishing passes, the developer notes.

Mastercam X5 includes a new high-speed technique for generating toolpaths: OptiRough is designed to remove large amounts of material quickly using dynamic milling motion.

The Mastercam X5 multi-axis suite has new machining techniques and a simple workflow-oriented interface. It lets the operator choose the basic type of work to be done from clear illustrations, and then presents a clear, step-by-step process for defining how the part should be cut. The multi-axis machining function also includes a new interface for that has been highly specialized for smooth, “gouge-free” engine head porting, according to the developer.

In addition, Mastercam X5 has a new 3D-surface, high-speed technique for generating toolpaths — OptiRough — that is designed to remove large amounts of material quickly using dynamic milling motion. “Large, aggressive cuts are followed by fast, smaller up-cuts, safely delivering a fully roughed part faster than ever,” according to the developer.

The last highlight of the new Mastercam release is “Smart” hybrid finishing, which it says “intelligently blends two efficient cutting techniques in a single toolpath.” The resulting toolpath evaluates the model shape and switches smoothly between Constant Z cutting and Constant Scallop machining, in an efficient process that results in a much finer finish, with less work.
