Functionality, Energy Efficiency Combine in New Small-Footprint Drive

Dec. 30, 2010
Siemens introduces distributed drive for material handling, industrial applications

The G110D has integrated plug-and-play power and control for easy installation, and an optional Intelligent Operator Panel (IOP) for simple text application setup.

Siemens recently released a new drive platform it recommends for installations near to motors in operations where water or dust ingression are a concern. The Sinamics® G110D distributed drives are the latest addition to Siemens’ Totally Integrated Automation portfolio, an engineering framework that enables manufacturers to design their automation processes optimally from a single computer screen.

Siemens Drive Technologies division supplies electrical and mechanical products and applications for the complete drive train, including energy-efficient motors and drives, as well as products and services for production machinery and machine tools. It offers standard products, industry-specific control and drive solutions, mechatronics support, and online services for web-based fault management and preventive maintenance.

According to the developer, the Sinamics G110D combines functionality, energy efficiency, a small footprint, low total cost-of-ownership, and usability in a single drive. Applications range from material handling (e.g., conveyors, carousels) to pumps, fans, compressors, and other industrial equipment.

It’s offered as an economical drive with integrated plug-and-play power and control for easy installation, and an optional Intelligent Operator Panel (IOP) for simple text application setup in a reduced footprint. The IOP also assists machine operators with a greater level of control, as well as alarm status alerts and resolution advice, reducing troubleshooting time.

The Sinamics G110D includes an optional power-disconnect switch and the IP65 metal housing enclosure has a low profile for easy mounting near the motor, and requiring no drive cabinet. The drive is suitable for direct communication with a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) or control via I/O inputs. AS-Interface bus configuration and optional maintenance and manual-auto switch are incorporated into the drive, so it’s easy to integrate with other hardware in an overall control schematic. Integrated brake control and quick stop functions provide a higher degree of reliability in heavy-load operations.
