A BLAST OF COLD AIR IS HELPING shops boost cutting speeds and extend tool life in dry-machining applications. The stream of subzero air comes from the Cold Air Gun developed by ITW Vortec, Cincinnati. This method of cooling the cutting zone reduces heat buildup, thereby improving product finishes and tolerances.

The gun speeds dry-machining rates for milling, turning, drilling, grinding, and sawing of metal, plastic, and ceramic materials.

The Cold Air Gun uses vortextube technology that separates compressed air into hot and cold airstreams, generating temperatures as low as -30° F. Using only factory compressed air as its power source, the tube has no internal moving parts to maintain.

Users adapt cooling for specific applications using the gun's adjustable temperature and airflow settings and instant on/off capability. Other features include a 5-µ autodrain filter, an integral muffler for quiet operation, and a magnetic swivel base for easy installation.
