Gleason Corp.'s Phoenix II 600HC bevel-gear-cutting machine sports a special monolithic column. The cutter and work spindles are attached directly to that column, with the cutter spindle pivoting to create a root angle, rather than the work spindle being attached to a rotating base. This results in the shortest structural overhang of both the cutter and part for stiffness and thermal stability.
