The design of the body and integrated ports allow coolant and chips to escape the clamping zone. Mounting holes in the fixed jaw allow mounting of workpiece stops from both sides. Actuation of the vise is done from the side of the fixed jaw with an Allen wrench on a ratchet handle. With its rack-and-pinion design, the movable jaw can be quickly and precisely adjusted. With a small rotation of a quick lever, the clamping operation is done within seconds with no need of a crank handle or bevel gear. The company says this design allows the Kontec KSL to be positioned in any location, even in the center of a machining table. The vises can be mounted to machine tables using lateral or vertical keyways, and they can be combined with Kontec's Unilock quick-change pallet system.
Kontec KSL manual vises from Schunk Inc. (www.schunkusa.com) clamp cubic workpieces onto universal vertical machining centers or any 4th or 5th axes table with clamping forces up to 50 kN (11,240 lb). Numerous standard jaw configurations are available, and the vises are available with base-jaw widths of 100 mm (3.94 in.), 125 mm (4.92 in.) or 160 mm (6.30 in.).
