The parts-storage system in the Body Weld Shop of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), Georgetown, Ky., consisted of a network of open shelving that was disorganized, inflexible, and non-aesthetically pleasing. Sensitive electronic parts sat exposed to the shop environment. And because the system's shelves and drawers were fixed, they offered no configurability. TMMK turned to Lista International Corp., which designs and manufactures modular storage systems.
Lista provided the automaker with the Shelf Converter Drawer System of modular drawers set in a preassembled frame. The system easily inserts into existing, standard shelving to deliver all the benefits of a modular drawer system — organization, better space utilization, more accessibility, and pleasing aesthetics. For TMMK, the system transformed its open shelving into an efficient system for maximum organization of small parts and tools. Electronic parts now store in enclosed spaces, protected from contaminants.
According to John Raymer, body weld maintenance manager at TMMK's Weld Shop, the department stores subcompact parts using the Shelf Converter System. "We now maintain all similar components in one area," he says, "so people can find a part far more easily in an area of similar components, rather than combing through a warehouse full of different ones."
Raymer adds, "from an efficiency standpoint, it's about 15% to 50% easier to find a part." Adding to this, the department incorporated a labeling system for parts identification that enhances the storage system's performance. Drawers extend 100%, and the handles have label holders.
