Hard Metal Milling Discs

Angle milling, instead of grinding, offers efficient surface preparation, with advantages for sustainability and health/safety too.

MAIJA-FRÄSTECHNIK GmbH milling discs are formed in hard metal, not of HSS, so that cutting edges slowly round off while the amount of material removed slowly decreases. They can be resharpened up to seven times, and at the end of service life are fully recyclable.

While grinding produces metal dust, milling produces chips, which do not get contaminated with the abrasion of the milling disc. The chips are recyclable, too.

The Maija milling discs have a longer service life (six weeks) than common grinding wheels, and with four weeks required for resharpening, just two milling discs can be employed for uninterrupted work.

The recommended (but not necessary) tools are hand angle millers, outwardly similar to hand angle grinders but with technical and security-related differences. At first, the speed of the hand angle millers has been adjusted to the work with the milling disc. Also, the machines have a special guard to enhance safe operation.

While conventional milling with CNC machines is place bound, the Maija milling discs allow the use of hand angle millers. This will reduce costs when working on oversized structures (e.g., turbine structures.)

The processed material attains a metallic bright surface that will prevent cavities when welding the processed areas – so no time-consuming corrections are required at those points. Alternatively, the Maija milling discs can be used to open cavity-pocked areas in preparation for welding.

Besides cavities, grinding also causes structural changes and material discoloration. Working with milling discs prevents this, as the material only reaches a temperature of 40-60 °C, even after being processed for a long time.
