The U.S. Navy awarded $117.9 million to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to continue full-rate production of 101 specially developed, medium-caliber cannon turrets for U.S. Marine Corps amphibious combat vehicles. If all options are exercised the contract’s total value will be $271.5 million.
Late last year, the Navy awarded $329 million to Kongsberg for175 of the turrets, which are lightweight fixtures for the ACV-30 BAE Systems-built amphibious vehicle used to deploy U.S. Marines from ship to shore. The ACV-30 is an 8x8 platform with open-ocean capability, land mobility, survivability, and payload functionality, to accommodate operational requirements of the USMC.
Kongsberg is a Norwegian technology group that develops and manufactures systems for defense, space, and energy sectors. Its Protector RT20 lightweight turret system can be remotely controlled and operated from within the ACV-30, for crew safety. And it can automatically perform ballistic computations to simplify targeting.
The contract covers associated production costs, fielding, and support costs, support, and test equipment, plus spare units. The work will be performed by Kongsberg Defense Corp. in Johnstown, Penn., and in Kongsberg, Norway, and will be completed by September 2027.
