Doosan Infracore is rolling out a new vertical machining center it touts for ensuring high-productivity and precision-tolerance processing capability, in a small footprint. The DNM 400A vertical machining center is also affordable — less than $70,000, according to Doosan.

The new VMC’s all-important footprint is 86.7×87.2 in., so it presents no problem for smaller shops and will be simple to install in buildings with standard 8×8-ft. doors. The machine’s maximum part size is 25.0×17.1×20.1 in., and 881 lbs.

As for its construction, the DNM 400A is fitted with a solid, one-piece Meehanite casting that is “strategically ribbed” to offset distortion during heavy or interrupted cuts. The fine-grained iron is used because of its excellent dampening and heat-dissipating ability. The design includes widely spaced linear guideways that support the saddle in all locations, regardless of the table’s load distribution. Traverses of 1,181 ipm are possible along all three axes, and each of the guideways is induction-hardened and precision ground.

The DNM 400A is powered by a 15-hp spindle motor driving ISO#40 taper tools at up to 8,000 rpm, delivering 52 ft./lbs of torque. The cartridge-type spindle is supported by precision-class, “permanently lubricated” bearings, while a sturdy drive belt eliminates slippage, reduces vibration, and supports thermal stability.

A 20-station, double-arm automatic tool changer handles cutting tools with exceptional speed, changing tools as quickly as 1.3 seconds. The Big Plus dual-contact tooling system creates full contact along the spindle taper and the toolholder flange, ensuring maximum rigidity for more precise cutting and longer tool life. Both the Big Plus and standard tool holders can be mounted at any automatic tool-changing station without special adaptors.

Other features that Doosan emphasizes for the new machine include its rigid tapping capability; auger-style chip conveyor; cooling and lubrication systems; program- and data-protection key switch; and a portable manual pulse generator that moves in increments of x1, x10, and x100, to speed and simplify fixture or part alignments. Operators manage the DNM 400A through a Fanuc Oi-MD color controller.
