Reduce Manufacturing Costs
IMTS 2008 can help reduce your manufacturing costs. You'll see faster, more precise machines; cutting tools to process virtually any material; finishing technologies; automation systems; quality instruments and manufacturing software. You'll see how to reduce cycle times and increase productivity. For more information, go to www.imts.com
Tips On Cutting Titanium Titanium has several attractive qualities that included twice the elasticity of steel, making it an ideal choice for applications that require flexible materials that don't crack or rupture. Also, titanium alloys resist corrosion and oxidation better than stainless steels. However, the same qualities that enhance titanium's appeal also contribute to its being one of the most difficult to machine materials. Shops that that understand this material's peculiarities can machine them successfully and cost-effectively.
Inserts For Cutting Hardened Steel New low-content CBN inserts with near diamond hardness balance CBN content, grain size, binder, coating and edge micro geometry to produce an insert for high speed and heavy interrupted machining of case-hardened steels (45 HRc to 65 HRc) with surface finishes that nearly eliminate the need for grinding.
Exotic Cutting Materials New ceramic inserts are composed of aluminum oxide reinforced with silicon carbide whiskers. These whiskers have high mechanical strength and act like reinforcing steel bars in concrete, improving the strength and fracture toughness of the cutting insert. They are designed for aerospace parts machining applications involving Inconel, Stellite, Waspalloy, Hastelloy, and other high-temperature alloys. And, they are equally productive in the automotive industry, machining alloyed gray cast-iron brake disks, and in the roll products segment removing casting crust or heavily worn rolling surfaces.
High Performance Machining/Grinding Fluids If you need a hard-working coolant, check out this new semi-synthetic. The fluid provides as much as a 30 percent increase in sump life, as much as a 40 percent improvement in tool life, an increase in productivity of 20 percent, excellent control for rancidity, and reduced concentrate usage. It is for use in a broad range of medium to heavy-duty machining and grinding operations with ferrous and many non-ferrous metals.
Laser System Detects Broken Tools If you are worried about damage to expensive workpieces by broken tools, you'll be interested in how this motorcycle manufacturer solved the problem. A noncontact laser system detects a broken tool before it can damage a workpiece eliminating scrap, re-machining and lost time.

Is your software helping you achieve your business goals or holding you back?
Toolmakers and manufacturers are faced with a difficult decision when selecting design or manufacturing software solutions. With so many choices, making sure you have the right solution for your business can become a daunting exercise. While it's easy to get lost in the technical feature-ware presented by the vendors, toolmakers and manufacturers should focus on the solution's fit to their process and its contribution to their business goals.
American Machinist will be presenting this webinar on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 2pm ET/11am PT. Register Now!
