Commentary by Editor Bruce Vernyi Lasers and liquid nitrogen now are part of the tools that a machinist can use to improve the performance of a part or to cut metal better and faster, but you have to know how to use them. Lasers can be trained on a very specific area of a part to make the proper bearing surfaces, and the cryogenic cooling that liquid nitrogen supplies can be used to maintain close tolerances. Both of these processes promise strong returns on the investments needed to put them into your tool box. Read more. Featured Advertiser
Makino — a leading manufacturer of horizontal and vertical machining centers and EDM machines — has announced a new series of online Webinars. Designed for shops of all types and sizes, the seminars are free to anyone who registers. The planned seminars are intended for shops in the automotive, aerospace, medical product and die and mold industries. In addition to metal cutting and die/mold, the seminars will cover new technologies, such as micromachining. Mark Rentschler, marketing manager, says, "Online seminars allow anyone with an Internet connection to attend without losing a day of work." The seminars concentrate on shop efficiency, lean manufacturing, asset utilization, machine tool integration and automation, machine tool technologies, and metal cutting processes. Makino's application engineers, product managers and guest speakers will give presentations. Click here for more info on upcoming seminars and registration information. Featured ArticlesHeat treating Lasers can improve the performance of machined parts that require case hardening and have bearing surfaces, and they are be used at lower cost than heat treating. In addition, lasers can harden parts in exact locations for bearing surfaces and to exact depths, eliminating the need to heat-treat the entire part. Read more. Turning Operations A process that uses liquid nitrogen in machining keeps the workpiece at a constant temperature and cryogenically cools cutting inserts, allowing them to cut deeper and faster. The process can be used to cut rough machining time to 15 minutes from as much as four hours, its developers say. Read more.
