A Michigan diemaker had problems meeting air-quality standards. Its two old bag-type dust collectors couldn't suction steel dust from the plant's air. So the company replaced them with two Sternvent CYD3620 dust collectors, each designed for three-station grinding benches.
The collectors include a downdraft grating at each bench and a doghouse hood for close capture of grinding dust. The new collectors — with 20-hp cyclones — exhaust to the atmosphere, require no shakers, and deposit grindings in 55-gallon drums, which are emptied weekly. In addition, they are quieter than their predecessors.
Previously, workers at the grinding stations had to wear filter masks. Shortly after installation of the Sternvent units, air-filter monitors indicated that the plant was well within indoor air-quality regulations. Now, most grinding can be done without a dust mask.
