ALTHOUGH SRS MANUFACTURING IN CHESTERFIELD, Mich., has sustained annual growth, the company's business has changed dramatically over its seven-year existence. The shop, which specializes in CNC turning and milling, now faces enormous price pressures. Large runs used to be 1,000 to 2,000 pieces. Today, a big order involves about 400 pieces, and JIT delivery is critical.
To roll with the economic punches and stay competitive, SRS keeps a close eye on capital-equipment costs. The shop has four Mazak turning centers, three Bridgeports, and a vertical machining center. The Mazaks, says Scott Stay, president of SRS, increase productivity and efficiency at a 15% lower cost as compared to similar machines.
The shop's newest machine, a Mazak QT Nexus 200 turning center provides new levels of speed, precision, and efficiency. As compared to the machine's predecessor, spindle output is 20% higher, bar capacity is 35% larger, top spindle speed is 10% faster, and Z-axis traverse is 10% quicker.
Sporting an 8-in. chuck, the QT Nexus 200 provides SRS with a 40.2-in. maximum machining length and 26 kW (35 hp) of spindle output for speeds up to 5,000 rpm. Its turret indexes at 0.18 sec/position and uses all existing SQT 200 tools.
SRS relies on the machine's 40% increase in rigidity for improved part precision. The machine's spindle is 10.5 in. shorter, which reduces deflection by 85% for better surface finishes and cylindricity.
