GE Aviation Draws $1.5B Contract for New F-15s

Nov. 2, 2021
The jet-engine builder will be the exclusive provider of F110 engines for a new series of fighter aircraft, with up to 329 engines to be supplied over 10 years.

GE Aviation won a $1.58-billion contract from the U.S. Air Force to supply hundreds of F110 engines for the new Boeing F-15EX Eagle II – a decision that removes Pratt & Whitney from the supplier program for propulsion technology for that new fighter aircraft.

The F-15EX Eagle II is a new, single-seat variant of the long-standing F-15 twin-engine aircraft program, aiming to replace and improve upon the USAF’s current F-15C/D. The U.S. Dept. of Defense has proposed a total procurement of 144 of the new aircraft.

The order to GE Aviation covers 29 F110-GE-129 engines, including spares, to be followed by seven option lots for an estimated total of 329 engines. The deliveries are scheduled to be completed by mid-2031.

Currently, GE is delivering engines in Lot 1, which includes two test aircraft that Boeing supplied recently and now are undergoing flight testing.

“We are honored to help the U.S. Air Force open a new chapter by providing reliable F110 power for the F-15EX,” stated Shawn Warren, GE’s vice president and general manager of combat and trainer engines. “The F110 production line is active today and ready to deliver on the U.S. Air Force’s urgent and compelling requirement for an F-15EX propulsion system. We’re pleased with the engine’s performance on the two F-15EX test aircraft flying today, and we’re excited to bring that performance to the entire planned fleet.”
