Poco Graphite's series of plastic EDM surface-finish gages lets moldmakers and their customers select desired EDM finishes. Gages show up to 16 sample finishes per side, with each finish created using standard settings that shops can replicate on their own machines.

The gages were developed in cooperation with individual machine tool manufacturers that burned cavities using their programmed machine settings to obtain the selected surface finishes. Two grades of graphite were used to produce cavities — one side was burned with EDM-3, an ultrafine grade, and the other with EDM-200, a superfine grade.

Different from other available plastic gages, the Poco gage demonstrates how the graphite grade and the program settings work together to create special and repeatable EDM finishes. Because appearance is important in consumer products, the production challenge is to translate the design specification into the finished piece while maintaining quality and managing production costs. Predictable EDM finishes eliminate the need for a more expensive etched mold.

Poco plastic surface-finish gages are available at no charge.
