UGS has launched Version 16 of Solid Edge, a 3D CAD system for the product-lifecycle-management market. The new version is said to make designing complex products easy.

System design features include adjustable parts, fastener systems, and dynamic families of assemblies, all of which increase design-process flexibility. Version 16 also enhances Solid Edge's 2D/3D-design capabilities with increased familiarity for AutoCAD users, an ability to create 3D parts from 2D assembly layouts, and tools for hybrid 2D/3D designs. One such tool is Zero D, which permits defining product structure prior to committing geometries to paper.

Virtual Studio+, an advanced photorealistic-rendering solution within Version 16, provides artistic, sketch-based rendering for early stage representations and concept reviews. For machine design, Solid Edge adds frame design and piping functions that complement system design and hybrid 2D/3D enhancements for more focus on the process-equipment industry.

Also in the new version, Solid Edge Mold Tooling now automates the design of additional features such as runner bars, inserts, stripper plates, and water channels. In addition, it comes with standard libraries for other popular component suppliers and the ability to define custom mold bases.
