TNS Machining in Muskego, Wis., was aggravated with trying different types of coolants for the variety of metals it works with, machining processes it uses, and quality levels it requires. The prototype and productionmachining job shop wanted one universal and consistent watersoluble coolant that worked in all its machines and didn't cause problems such as residue and rust on parts, inadequate lubrication, short sump life, excessive foaming, and bacterial growth. Fortunately, TNS found Picocool 5254.

Picocool 5254, a high-tech oilfree synthetic coolant, reportedly keeps TNS's sumps and delivery systems bacteria free, provides high lubricity without excessive foam, and works with the shops various machines and materials.

According to Scott Rowinski, vice president of TNS, Picocool 5254 meets all the shop's objectives and is its one "universal and versatile" shop-wide coolant for all watersolublesystems. For example, in TNS's steelgrinding operations ranging from 0.5 to 0.020-in. stock removal, the coolant improves surface finishes, and bacterial growth is non-existent from cast iron or steel swarf accumulated in the bottoms of sump tanks. For cut and form tapping smalldiameter holes in 6061 aluminum, Picocool 5254 delivers lubricity for continuous production runs without tap changes. Similarly, in precision machining both 7075 and 6061 cast and wrought aluminum alloys, it extends production runs between toolchanges, and in some cases the improvement is over 100%.

Also, Picocool 5254's clear solution lets TNS workers inspect parts and tooling and leaves machinery and workpieces clean. Tramp oils quickly separate from the coolant for easily skimming off sumps. Using standard hygiene practices, workers handle parts without experiencing skin problems.

In addition, the coolant generates no oil smoke or heat-vapor mist during severe machining. And because there is no rancidity and associated oil split outs, the coolant provides long sump life for few clean outs, less product consumption, and minimal waste-disposal costs. In addition, Picocool 5254 requires no chemical additives, oxygenated gases, or auxiliary equipment treatments to keep it fresh and clean.
