Spirit Aero to Supply Spares to Asian Carrier

Sept. 6, 2012
Lion Air … Indonesia’s largest private airline Competitive pricing, parts availability

Spirit AeroSystems will provide spare parts for Lion Air in a multi-year agreement that the aero structures producer emphasized will ensure competitive pricing for the airline on all parts in the supplier’s catalog, and secure availability of critical parts like thrust reversers, fuselages, and wing components, particularly for Boeing aircraft.

The value and terms of the contract were not detailed.

PT Lion Mentari Airlines, operating as Lion Air, is Indonesia’s largest private airline. It operates one Boeing 737-300, five 737-400, seven 737-800, 68 737-900ER, and two 747-400 airplanes.

Last November Lion Air placed one of the largest orders ever with Boeing Commercial Aircraft, in terms of the number of planes and the total value of the contract, when it agreed to purchase 29 737-900ER and 201 737 MAX aircraft, with options for 150 more. In February of this year the 737 MAX aircraft were confirmed as 737 MAX 9s; deliveries of the -900ERs will start in 2016, and the MAX deliveries will start in 2017.

Spirit AeroSystems is headquartered in Wichita, and has operations in Tulsa and McAlester, Okla.; and Kinston, N.C., where it produces fuselages, pylons, nacelles, and wing components. The group also operates in England, France, and Malaysia, and supplies aftermarket spare parts, maintenance/repair/overhaul, and fleet support services for aircraft OEMs, including Airbus.

The Spirit Aftermarket Customer Support (ACS) division will administer the Lion Air contract.

"Lion Air has expressed long-term confidence in the Boeing 737 product line and Spirit AeroSystems is committed to providing long-term support to this important and growing carrier," stated vice president and general manager Mike Williams, of Spirit Aftermarket Customer Support. "As we expand our support infrastructure in the Asia Pacific market, providing a high level of support to Lion Air will be a key component of that plan."
