GM Extends China Venture for 20 Years

The recently restructured partnership with China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. will continue through 2047, with emphasis on new electric and hybrid vehicles developed in China.

General Motors agreed to renew its joint-venture partnership with China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC) through 2047, expressing confidence in the SAIC-GM enterprise “and its long-term growth potential,” according to John Roth, GM senior vice president and president of GM China. Since it was established in 1997, the SAIC-GM enterprise has manufactured over 20 million vehicles, including Buicks, Cadillacs, and Chevrolets for the Chinese market.

The 50-50 SAIC-GM partnership had been scheduled to end next year.

The venture was the object of a restructuring effort in 2025, aimed at regaining profitability after a period of falling sales totals. SAIC-GM returned to profitability in 2025, according to GM, and it produced approximately 521,000 vehicles last year.

In the restructuring, SAIC-GM reduced its manufacturing capacity, reduced inventory, narrowed its product portfolio, and refocused its new product development toward electric and hybrid vehicles.

Strategically, the restructuring also positioned China as the venture’s global engineering and export hub. While the U.S. market is not an export target for SAIC-GM due to U.S. tariffs, one of the joint-venture’s previous developments will be manufactured by General Motors in Fairfax, Kan., starting in 2028.

SAIC-GM’s exports will be directed to the Middle East, Africa, South America, Mexico, and Asia-Pacific regions. The venture’s future developments will be Buick and Cadillac models, particularly EVs and HEVs.

“Today’s agreement reflects our shared confidence in SAIC-GM and its long-term growth potential,” Roth stated. “We are committed to strong performance in the China market, and we see meaningful opportunities to compete in select international markets: the Middle East, Africa, South America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific.”
