GE Vernova is increasing capacity for manufacturing some electrical grid components at its power transmission plant in Charleroi, Penn., to shorten lead-times amid heavy demand - including data centers, it noted. U.S. utilities are investing and estimated $1.4 trillion through 2030 to modernize and expand the electric grid, to meet rising power demand, including the needs of A.I. engines.
When GE Vernova announced its Charleroi expansion plans in 2025, they included new production lines and manufacturing assets for high-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, and instrument transformers to meet accelerating demand driven by grid modernization, AI data centers, and electrification.
The particular investments have not been detailed, though the operations there include mechanical fabrication and assembly; electrical assembly; bus and conductor installation; mechanical drive assembly; wiring and controls installation; and quality inspection. It also has a range of testing capabilities.
The expansion is part of a $138-million capital investment program announced last year. And that project is part of a broader expansion of its U.S. manufacturing operations and research centers, between 2025 and 2028.

"By investing in American manufacturing and our workforce, we are strengthening the domestic supply chain and helping deliver the essential technologies our customers need to build a more reliable and resilient grid."
The Charleroi plant expansion is expected to result in approximately 275 new manufacturing jobs through 2028. The new jobs include wiring technicians, mechanics, test technicians, logistics coordinators, and supply-chain specialists.
