New titanium screws hold promise for aerospace

TriMas Corporation’s Monogram Aerospace Fasteners business unit has developed the capability to produce seven types of titanium screws used by large, commercial airframe manufacturers.

Titanium parts have increasingly being used by airframe manufacturers due to the metal’s lightness of weight and galvanic compatibility with carbon fiber reinforced composite structures.

Composite-based aircraft structures are used on the newest civil aircraft programs, such as the Boeing 787, Airbus A350, and Bombardier’s new C-Series airliners. Titanium parts are also used for applications in military programs like Lockheed’s new F-35 Lightning II fighter jet.
