DMG Launches DMU 60 eVo 5-Axis Machining Center

July 21, 2011
Sturdy but flexible design for complex workpieces
With a footprint of 6.1 m2, DMG Mori Seiki claims the DMU 60 eVo is the most compact machine in its class.

DMG Mori Seiki is introducing the newest model in DMG’s eVo Series, the DMU 60 eVo, which is offered particularly for manufacturing complex workpieces, for example for aerospace and medical equipment markets. The eVo Series is a line of universal milling machines that promise productivity and flexibility, and have already sold more than 3,000 units worldwide. A rising demand for machining complex parts was the impetus for the DMU 60 eVo, according to DMG Mori Seiki.

Distinctive features of the new machine include a gantry design that maximizes its rigidity and precision machining capability; an improved swivel rotary table mechanism; a space-saving design; and an optional linear motor drive.

The gantry construction places the X and Y-axes in the upper part of the machine, which according to the builder means the unit can minimize spindle overhang and increase stability and rigidity, thereby maintaining high precision. Also, the optimally positioned Y-axis saddle and the rounded design for the front of the machine make it possible to set-up more efficiently and provide two-side accessibility to the working area.

The eVo Series’ swivel rotary table has been strengthened, according to the developer. The 600×500-mm swivel rotary table (corner: #630 mm) maintains the design concept while doubling the loading capacity to 400 kg. With a swivel range from -5° to +110°, the machine will handle a wide range of machining tasks. Turning specifications with a C-axis rotational speed of 1,000 min-1 (FD specifications) are available as an option, too.

A standard DMU 60 eVo uses a ball screw drive for the X and Y axes (rapid traverse rate: 50 m/min). The optional linear motor drive (rapid traverse rate: 80 m/min) is offered for customers who require greater efficiency. The linear motor drive offers high speed and high acceleration feed, and achieves superb positioning accuracy, with a positioning error only one-tenth of that of the ball screw drive. Additionally, the machine uses fewer consumable parts, which the developer indicates will require less maintenance.

With a footprint of 6.1 m2, the DMU 60 eVo is the most compact machine in its class, DMG Mori Seiki asserted, and due to the machine's construction, the footprint remains the same, regardless of the size of the tool magazine.
