Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation will design and supply two wet flue-gas desulfurization systems for a coal-fired power plant in Wheatfield, Ind. The $54-million contract also includes manufacturing of components related to the installation for Northern Indiana Public Service Co.’s 465-MW R.M. Schahfer Generating Station.
The B&W Power Generation Group is an operating subsidiary of The Babcock & Wilcox Co., which engineers and builds systems for nuclear, fossil, and renewable power generation. The first installation for NIPSCO is scheduled for the fall of 2013, and the second in the fall of 2015.
Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) is the process that removes sulfur dioxide (SO2) from industrial emissions, as from fossil-fuel process like steel mills, foundries, or power plants that burn coal or oil. Sulfur dioxide is one of the elements that the EPA indicates forms acid rain.
“New federal emissions enforcements and regulations appear to have re-invigorated FGD customers, and B&W PGG is actively pursuing several important, large projects in which its technologies align with the regulatory needs of utility customers,” stated B&W PGG president and COO Richard L. Killion.
