Rofin-Sinar acquires 80 percent of m2k-laser

March 20, 2007

Rofin-Sinar Laser GmbH (www.rofin.com), an affiliate company of Rofin-Sinar Technologies, Ind., a developer and manufacturer of high-performance laser beam sources and laser-based solutions, announced that it has acquired 80 percent of the common stock of m2k-laser GmbH (www.m2k-laser.de) of Freiburg, Germany, in a cash transaction. Further terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
The remaining 20 percent of m2k-laser common stock is still held by the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Munich, Germany, and two former founders. Dr. Mrc Kelemen, one of the founders, will assume responsibilities of Managing Director for operations.
M2k-laser, founded in 2001 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Solid-State Physics in Freiburg, Germany, develops and manufactures semiconductor lasers based on the III-V compounds GaAs and GaSb for use predominantly in the scientific industry. Its main products are tapered diode lasers and tapered amplifiers. Under two separate additional agreements, m2k-laser will pay for access to certain know-how and for the use of the existing infrastructure of the Fraunhofer Institute in Freiburg.
