Ford Seeking Driver Warnings For Active Safety Technology

DEARBORN, Mich., – Researchers at Ford's advanced driving simulator are devoting much of 2008 to study active safety technologies for vehicles, and ways to alert drivers of potentially dangerous driving incidents. Ford also conducted customer driving clinics to test warning systems for its new backup system, the Cross Traffic Alert with Blind Spot Monitoring warning system, which alerts drivers backing out of a parking space when traffic is approaching from the sides. The system will debut early next year and has three warnings – a flashing red light on the side mirror, an audible alert and a written warning on the instrument panel's message center. Boeing Awarded Contract To Develop Ultra-Long-Endurance Aircraft Technologies

ST. LOUIS -- Boeing won a $3.8 million Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract for Phase 1 of the Vulture air vehicle program, an effort to create a new category of ultra-long-endurance aircraft. DARPA's Vulture program calls for developing technologies and ultimately a vehicle that can deliver and maintain an airborne payload on station for an uninterrupted period of more than five years using a fixed-wing aircraft. Boeing is teaming with United Kingdom-based QinetiQ Ltd. for the program. The yearlong Phase 1 covers conceptual system definition, and formal reliability and mission success analysis, concluding with a System Requirements Review. It also requires conceptual designs for sub- and full-scale demonstrators. Read More

General Dynamics Awarded $57 Million for Abrams Tank Survivability Kits

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. -- General Dynamics Land Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics has landed $57 million in two contracts to upgrade Abrams Tanks for deployment in urban areas. The first award, valued at $45 million, is for 2,832 Loader's Armor Gun Shields. GM Brazil Announces New Engine Plant

Joinville City, Brazil - General Motors Brazil, along with officials from the Santa Catarina State and Joinville City, announced today the company's decision to build a new engine and automotive components plant in that city. The new plant will require investments of approximately US$ 200 million and is scheduled to begin production in the 4th quarter of 2009 --only 19 months from the announcement. The plant will employ 500 people and is expected to generate 1,300 indirect jobs. Read More
