Konecranes Eyeing Expansion of its Machine Tool Service Business

Nov. 3, 2010
Acquisitions help widen coverage for rebuilds, control retrofits, PM, calibration, and repair

Konecranes, the builder of cranes, lifts, and other industrial handling products and systems, continues to expand its Machine Tool Service business in the U.S. with the purchase of King Tool Co. in Erlanger, Ky. The value of the acquisition was not released. The Finland-based builder of cranes, lifts, and similar industrial handling systems, has maintained the MTS business in Scandinavia and the U.K. for several years, and launched it in the U.S. with the purchase of Machine Tool Solutions Unlimited in 2009.

Machine Tool Solutions Unlimited (MTSU) is a Cincinnati-based operation that offers machine tool rebuilds, control retrofits, preventive maintenance, calibration, and repair services.

Konecranes MTSU offers comprehensive services and support for all types and brands of machine tools, either for single machines or an entire shop. Its primary focus is on larger projects that consist of a complete or partial rebuild, remanufacturing, and/or retrofit of controls, motors, and drives of an existing machine. Rebuilding, remanufacturing, and retrofitting can be performed at a customer's plant, or machines may be transported to MTSU for service to minimize disruption.

MTSU's technical and mechanical capabilities include geometrical and alignment issues, and on-site analysis, repair, calibration, and/or equipment updates. Other on-site services include urgent response; electro/mechanical repairs; control service and troubleshooting; preventive maintenance; sheet metal covers and enclosures; component rebuilds; and way and ball screw rebuilding, conditioning, and service.

Since the MTSU acquisition in October 2009, Konecranes also purchased Ohio Hi-Speed Machine, in August 2010, which offers a comparable range of machine tool rebuilding, re-designing, retrofit, recalibration, and repair services. Now, it indicates that the acquisition of King Tool enables it to strengthen Konecranes MTS in the U.S. — from where it will expand its capabilities throughout the Americas.

"The acquisition of King Tool builds on our foundation in machine tool service (MTS). The MTS business of Konecranes in the U.S. is a strategic fit with our traditional core competency in overhead crane maintenance services,” stated Tom Kurtz, general manager, MTS, Konecranes Region Americas. “With the addition of King Tool, our growing MTS business allows us to broaden our offering to new and existing customers in a variety of industrial segments."
