AMERICAN MACHINIST FEATURES:

COMMENTARY: Let's stop playing the blame game

In this month's commentary, the recent Independence Day celebrations
prompt AMERICAN MACHINIST Editor Tom Grasson to ponder the current state
of the American mindset, and how it impacts upon the manufacturing
industry: ". . . the majority of U.S. citizens take our current standard
of living for granted. Perhaps this is why our nation is beginning to
accept the 'what's in it for me' mentality, and ignoring the spread of
special-interest groups, particularly in the government sector."

AMERICAN MACHINIST MANUFACTURING CO.:
EDM: Shopping for reliability

American Machinist is publishing a series of articles to help
manufacturing management better evaluate their metalworking-equipment
needs. In this seventh installment, readers learn that an EDM system is
only as strong as its weakest component, and that shops looking to
purchase such an EDM must evaluate every individual component in the
system.

MACHINE TOOLS: 30 years of success in the U.S.

In a banner year, Mazak Corp (U.S.A.) celebrates its 30th anniversary
accelerating sales, and a historic, unprecedented first - - the
exporting of its machines to Japan. AMERICAN MACHINIST Executive Editor,
Patricia L. Smith writes, "Mazak Corp. was set up to succeed from the
beginning. . . [embracing] the tenets of lean manufacturing, putting in
a modular assembly system, multitasking equipment, and new FMS
technology."

SPINDLES: Work-horse spindles

High-speed spindles with synchronous motors meet many machining needs.
Many shops dealing with a variety of jobs require spindles that handle
an entire machining operation on a single-spindle system. High-speed
spindles driven by synchronous motors possess these desirable features.
To boot, they're generally durable, reliable, virtually maintenance
free, and low cost. To read more, click here:
