Chanute and Wichita, Kan., Tulsa, Okla. “A strategic move” to become more competitive

Spirit AeroSystems Inc. is laying off approximately 360 salaried support and management employees at its operations in Kansas and Oklahoma. Specific details of changes in the production programs were not indicated.

Wichita-based Spirit AeroSystems said the affected workers would be provided with severance packages and “career transition services.”

The company, a designer and manufacturer of composite structural components like fuselages, pylons, nacelles, and wing components for commercial aircraft, has 10 locations in the U.S., England, France, Malaysia, and Scotland.

The affected operations are at Chanute and Wichita, Kan., and Tulsa, Okla. The plants produce structural products for various Boeing and Bombardier commercial jet programs, as well as several defense contracts for jets and defense systems.

“Today's action is a strategic move to make the company more competitive in a cost-sensitive environment,” Spirit AeroSystems stated, “and results from an ongoing workforce assessment designed to reduce overhead costs, increase efficiency, and drive improved performance.”
