Cummins Expands Emissions Reduction for Products, Operations

Six-year efforts to reduce carbon emissions, increase organization’s environmental sustainability score Cut engines’ carbon emissions by 3.5 million mtpy Cut CO2 per kilogram of goods moved by 10% Goals for water, waste and energy use

Engine builder Cummins Inc. outlined two new, corporate environmental sustainability goals, one concerning its products in-use and one addressing logistics of its managed freight. Both goals are part of a broader effort Cummins initiated last year to reduce its environmental footprint, including environmental sustainability goals for water, waste and energy use in Cummins operations.

"With millions of engines and generators in service around the world, there's no question in my mind that Cummins has the global reach to make a difference for the environment," stated Brian Mormino, Cummins’ executive director Worldwide Environmental Strategy and Compliance.

The new goals include a pledge to reduce CO2 emissions from Cummins engines by 3.5 million metric tons annually, equal to 350 million gallons of fuel. This would be equivalent to taking 3.2 million passenger vehicles off the road.

Last year, Cummins’ fuel-efficiency efforts reduced CO2 emissions from products in-use by a volume equal to the CO2 footprint of Cummins global facilities.

In addition, the manufacturer also is pledging to use the most efficient methods to move goods across the Cummins network, to cut CO2 per kilogram of goods moved by 10% by 2020. As part of this supply-chain strategy, Cummins has adopted a global transportation management system to improve the speed and efficiency of goods moved and to improve end-to-end visibility to manage the process.

Cummins noted that adding a goal for CO2 reduction would quantify the environmental benefit that it expects to achieve through this system, and accelerate and expand those efforts globally.

"We view our environmental sustainability plan as a process of continuous improvement," stated Mormino. "Cummins will continue to develop more strategies as our efforts mature and set new goals after we meet existing targets. "
