INDEX Corp. (www.index-usa.com) is introducing the V160 vertical grinding and machining center that incorporates ID/OD grinding, autoloading and rough machining (hard turning) with automatic in-machine wheel dressing and in-process gauging. The system is capable of performing inverted vertical OD and ID grinding and turning on one platform. INDEX says the self-loading inverted spindle concept eliminates the need for added automation systems since the moving spindle acts also as a gantry loader.

Nominal chucking capacity is 160 mm to 200 mm (6.5 inches to 8 inches) diameter. For OD grinding, a new flexible grinding spindle accepts grinding wheels up to 400 mm (16 inches) diameter and is driven by a steplessly programmable cooled motor spindle up to 6,000 rpm and 22 hp (15 kW). For ID grinding, various types of spindles are available with speeds ranging from 40,000 rpm to 100,000 rpm.

The X axis for the chucking spindle is equipped with a linear motor allowing traverse speeds of up to 180 ft/min (60 m/min).
