Clamp-free cutting

The Wen Magnetics Division of WEN Technology Inc. has developed magnetic workholding modules that provide clamp-free cutting zones with five clear sides for milling operations. The company says its NeoGrid magnetic workholding systems use electrically switched, permanent magnets that receive power only during the process to switch them "on" or "off." Once in an "on" or "off" position, the rare-earth, permanent magnets remain in that state until they are switched. The company says heat does not build up during use, ensuring dimensional stability, and that the permanent magnets also ensure a strong magnetic grip in the event of a power failure. The company also says its grid design allows exact part location and a variety of magnetic grip possibilities, and modular use of the workholders to accommodate large-table machining. With the use of simple, mild-steel blocks, that the company calls pole extensions, bolted to the chuck face, parts can be lifted to provide clearance for through drilling, edge milling and back machining. The workholders are available in three standard versions, each of which are offered with two options for magnetic gripping power.www.wenmag.com
