High-Speed, 3-Turret, Multitasking Turning Center

May 3, 2012
Long Y-axis, high tool capacity

Methods Machine Tools Inc. introduced the Nakamura-Tome NTY3-250 multitasking turning center recently, a machine center designed with three very rigid turrets, each with a Y-axis of 4.4 inches (112 mm), the longest Y-axis in its class. It’s a machine that “dramatically outperforms two-turret multitasking machines,” according to Methods, and one that will reduce downtime due to tool changeovers thanks to its 72-tool capacity. This factor also contributes to short cycles times and complete turning / machining / finishing capabilities.

The NTY3-250 provides X-axis and Z-axis speeds of 1,181 ipm and 1,574 ipm, respectively, so to accommodate these high speeds the machine weighs 31,807 lb (14,425 Kg), which helps to support stability in operation. Designed with a long distance — 47.24 in. (1,200 mm) — between spindles to eliminate any interference of tooling during multitasking, the NTY3-250 allows multiple tools to operate simultaneously. It also features a 60° slant bed for easy access to the work and tooling, as well as better chip flow.

The NTY3-250 has X-axis and Z-axis speeds of 1,181 ipm and 1,574 ipm, respectively, and to accommodate these speeds the machine “significantly outweighs its competition,” according to Methods Machine Tools. At 31,807 lb it is capable of stable performance.

Each of the three turrets holds 12 driven or 24 stationary tools for a maximum of 72 tool stations. Up to 35/30 HP is available for shaft/ work turning with synchronized spindles.

The NTY3-250 has a maximum turning diameter of 8.86 in. (225 mm), a maximum turning length of 35.65 in. (905.5 mm) and a 2.5 in. (65 mm) bar capacity.

For the convenience of the operator, the NTY3-250 has a 19-in. high-res LCD touchscreen panel. The Nakamura-Tome Intelligent Programming System (NT-IPS) is a built-in, PC-based platform that works in conjunction with the Fanuc 31i-B controller to give a high degree of functionality, as well as fast processing speeds. New standard functions include a spindle speed override switch, a program number search, C-axis synchronization, and helical interpolation.

Unlike many CNC interfaces that involve extensive menu selections and navigation through numerous screens, the NT-IPS is able to present a large amount of information in a clear format and allow simple one-touch access to all setting functions. The effect is faster set up and programming. A “trouble guidance” feature helps users identify and respond quickly to machine error signals by describing errors and possible causes, along with a series of pictures that show the location of the problem.

CAMplete TruePath Turn / Mill software is standard on Nakamura-Tome Multitasking Turning Centers. CAMplete Turn / Mill software is an integrated suite of G-Code editing, optimization, analysis and verification tools, enabling a full range of turn/ mill functions.
