Software for machinable artwork

Nov. 1, 2004
Mastercam Art lets users craft 2D sketches, clip art, photos, and CAD files into artistic relief designs and then cut them with specialized toolpaths. What normally takes a signmaker or skilled artisan weeks is done in minutes.

Users of Mastercam Art bring 2D sketches, clip art, photos, and CAD files to life by crafting them on screen and then cutting them with specialized toolpaths.

Mastercam Art, which adds-on to Mastercam Mill and Router products, eliminates many typical problems of creating machinable artwork. In the first step of the process, the software converts input artwork into flat, machinable geometry for a basic palette from which users craft a finished model.

In the second step, users pick elements of their flat art and create a full-3D sculpture. Mastercam Art then puffs it up so users can model by eye until reaching the desired look.

Creating a toolpath is the third step. After choosing one of the software's specialized toolpaths, users can modify them to try a variety of cutting techniques for perfect results. After creating a toolpath, Mastercam's solid-model verification simulates the part on screen in step four. In the final step, it creates G code for machining.
