Flowserve Corp. reports it is executing a new contract to supply plug valves for Australia’s Southern Seawater Desalination Plant, near Perth. The order was received in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to the Dallas-based manufacturer of flow-control products for infrastructure worldwide.
The Southern Seawater Desalination Plant as been under construction for nearly a year, and its target start-up date is late in 2011. It will use manual and automated Flowserve Durco PlugSeal valves in a series of high-pressure processes designed to yield 140,000 cubic meters of fresh water daily.
PlugSeal valves are made of super-duplex stainless steel with a fluoropolymer-coated plug for corrosion resistance. They are designed for tight shutoff and simple service without cutting out of line. The valves are to be used with the Flowserve RG series scotch-yoke actuators and Automax instrumentation, so the installation will feature single-source assemblies.
The water to be treated — 50 billion liters/year — will be supplied for residential use in greater Perth. The plant will be capable of doubling its capacity to 100 billion liters.
Some forecasts predict Perth will need an additional 150 billion liters/year of potable water to match the demands of a growing population over the coming 20 years, and to cope with declining reservoir levels following several years of low rainfall.
“Fresh, potable water is a very real need in areas like Perth, and we’re proud to be part of the solution,” said Tom Pajonas, president, Flowserve Flow Control Division. “Flowserve has considerable experience in the desalination industry, and it represents a significant opportunity for us to grow globally.”
