The Boeing Co. has a $2.5-billion order to deliver 19 commercial aircraft — 14 737s and five 777s — to Los Angeles-based Air Lease Corp. The order also includes options for four more 737s. The order completes an agreement that Boeing announced earlier this summer, during the Paris Air Show, when the customer was not named.

ALC and Boeing continue to work a separate agreement for four 787-9 Dreamliners.

The 737-800s to be delivered are described as the “Next Generation” of that longstanding model, which Boeing has said is 5% more fuel-efficient than the Next-Generation 737s delivered in 1998, and a new “performance improvement package” involving airframe and engine design changes, now in certification and expected to be in service by early 2012, will increase fuel efficiency 2% further via aerodynamic and engine changes.

ALC already has a backlog order for 60 Next-Generation 737-800s.

The 777-300ER is described by Boeing as the world's largest long-range twin-engine jetliner. It’s capable of carrying 365 passengers up to 7,930 nautical miles.

"This order for Next-Generation 737-800s and 777-300ERs is a key building block in the foundation of our growing commercial leasing fleet," stated Air Lease Corp. chairman and CEO Steven F. Udvar-Hazy. "With this order, we'll be able to offer our clients a most economical, fuel-efficient and versatile airplane, suitable for a variety of profitable missions."
